Trump Administration Takes Equity Stakes in Critical Mineral Companies
The Trump administration is purchasing equity stakes in domestic technology and mineral companies to reduce reliance on China for rare earth metals and lithium.
The administration of Donald Trump has implemented a strategic policy of taking equity stakes in companies essential to United States economic and defense security. This initiative focuses on securing domestic supplies of lithium and rare earth metals required for high-tech devices and defense systems, including drone systems and lasers, to reduce reliance on China.
Government investments to date include an 8.9 billion dollar stake in Intel Corp and a 35.6 million dollar stake in Trilogy Metals. The United States Department of Defense injected 400 million dollars into the preferred stock of MP Materials, while the United States Department of Energy announced a planned 5 percent stake in Lithium Americas.
Market speculation indicates the administration is considering further investments in Critical Metals and USA Rare Earth. Barbara Humpton, the chief executive officer of USA Rare Earth, confirmed the company is in close communication with the administration regarding these efforts.
