US and Mexico Conclude First USMCA Bilateral Trade Talks

The Government of the United States and the government of Mexico concluded the first round of bilateral trade negotiations on May 30, 2026, in Mexico City. The talks focused on revising the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) under pressure from President Donald Trump's tariff policies and threats to withdraw from the deal. Canada was excluded from these initial bilateral discussions.

U.S. negotiators focused on economic security, steel, aluminum, and automotive rules of origin. Specifically, President Trump and Trade Representative Judy Greer are seeking to mandate that 50% of all automobiles come from American manufacturing, a shift from the previous 70% North American requirement. The delegations also addressed the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico and regulatory compatibility for medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic products.

Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard described the dialogue as constructive. Both nations have scheduled a second round of negotiations for June 16-17 in Washington, D.C., to discuss agriculture and market fairness, followed by a third round in Mexico City during the week of July 20.
