Moonshot AI Plans Hong Kong IPO Following Kimi K3 Launch

Moonshot AI is preparing for a Hong Kong IPO and a $30 billion valuation after releasing its Kimi K3 model, which rivals top U.S. AI systems.

Beijing-based startup Moonshot AI is seeking shareholder approval for an initial public offering in Hong Kong, expected within six months. The company is finalizing a fundraising round that could value the firm at over $30 billion, an increase from a $20 billion valuation in May. Moonshot AI has held preliminary talks with Goldman Sachs and China International Capital Corporation regarding a potential $1 billion raise and is dismantling its red chip corporate structure to facilitate the listing.

The IPO push follows the July 17 launch of Kimi K3, an open-weight model with 2.8 trillion parameters. Unveiled during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, the model has topped benchmarks for coding and reasoning, positioning it as a direct challenger to OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5. This release drove the company's annual recurring revenue from $200 million in April to $300 million in June, though high demand forced a temporary pause on new subscriptions.

While Chinese President Xi Jinping called for global AI cooperation during the conference, the launch coincided with broader market volatility, contributing to declines in the Nasdaq and Asian equities. The company's growth occurs amid ongoing friction with U.S. firms; Anthropic has accused Moonshot AI and other Chinese labs of using fraudulent accounts to conduct industrial-scale distillation attacks to extract capabilities from U.S. models, a claim the Chinese government denies.
