APC Forms 2027 Campaign Council Amid Political Criticism

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has constituted its Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election, appointing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as chairman and Senator Abdul’aziz Yari as Director-General. The council includes over 200 members, including government officials such as Nigeria Revenue Service Chairman Zacheus Adedeji and Budget Office Director-General Tanimu Yakubu, who were assigned to fundraising and finance roles.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, urged Senator Yari to reject the appointment. Kwankwaso argued that Yari should not lead a campaign for the continuation of the current administration given persistent poverty, unemployment, and insecurity. He characterized the upcoming election as a struggle between the oppressed masses and those who have benefited from the existing system, while questioning the neutrality of appointing active government officials to campaign finance roles.

Simultaneously, Senator Kawu Sumaila of Kano South advised the council to prioritize empathy over a strategy focused solely on administration achievements. Sumaila cautioned that the team must acknowledge the economic hardships caused by the removal of petrol subsidies and the rising cost of living. He emphasized that victory depends on party unity and strict adherence to the Constitution and Electoral Act to maintain public confidence in President Tinubu's re-election bid.
