Azeri Light Oil Prices Rise Amid Hormuz Blockade
Azeri Light crude prices climbed as U.S. Navy blockades in the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian missile strikes against the UAE fueled global supply concerns.
Prices for Azerbaijan's Azeri Light crude oil rose on August 19 and 20, reaching $95.48 per barrel at Italy's Augusta port and $91.79 per barrel at Türkiye's Ceyhan port. Global oil prices increased by more than 3% early in the week, driven by geopolitical instability and supply concerns in the Middle East.
Donald Trump maintains a U.S. Navy blockade in the Strait of Hormuz despite his assertions that "oil continues to flow through this waterway". Tensions have escalated as Iranian forces intensified military operations, conducting eight attacks on vessels this month, including ships linked to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The conflict expanded when the United Arab Emirates accused Iran of launching ballistic missile strikes against its territory. In response, the United Arab Emirates suspended all financial and economic transactions with Tehran. Meanwhile, the Energy Information Administration reported a 4.4 million barrel increase in U.S. crude oil inventories.
