Nigeria Holds Osun Governorship and Ebonyi Local Elections
Nigeria conducted a governorship election in Osun State and local government polls in Ebonyi State amid federal efforts to ensure institutional neutrality.
Nigeria held two distinct electoral processes in August 2026, focusing on state-level leadership in Osun and grassroots administration in Ebonyi. In Osun, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took steps to protect the credibility of the August 15 governorship election by directing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to vacate a court order that had frozen Osun State Government accounts. This intervention aimed to prevent perceptions of federal interference in the process overseen by Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan.
To further ensure neutrality, the Nigerian Army instructed deployed troops to remain impartial and operate only in support of the police. The election served as a test of institutional integrity following Amupitan's appointment by the president in October 2025.
Separately, in Ebonyi State, Osborn Nweze Umahi won the election for Chairman of the Ohaozara Local Government Area. Running on the All Progressives Congress platform, the 28-year-old engineer and son of Minister of Works David Umahi campaigned on infrastructure development and accountability. Following his victory, Umahi pledged to forgo his salary and allowances for his entire tenure to signal a commitment to public service over personal gain.
