Indian Rupee Weakens as Fed and RBI Signal Rate Hikes

The Reserve Bank of India monitors currency volatility and inflation risks as the U.S. Federal Reserve signals potential rate hikes in September.

The Reserve Bank of India is intervening in currency markets to stabilize the rupee amid downward pressure caused by rising Brent crude oil prices and anticipated U.S. monetary tightening. While the rupee recently reached 95.3775 per US dollar, the central bank has worked to keep trading rangebound to mitigate volatility.

Market instability is driven by signals from the Federal Reserve System. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh indicated that rate hikes may be necessary if inflation remains above target, fueling expectations for a policy move during the September 15-16 meeting. This outlook has contributed to selling pressure on Indian government bonds, pushing the 10-year benchmark yield to 6.9108 per cent.

Indian policymakers are preparing for similar domestic adjustments. Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that evidence of inflationary spillovers could warrant "policy tightening," while Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta noted that a case for a rate hike may emerge this year. Market participants are now awaiting April-June GDP data to determine if the central bank will formally implement these tightening measures.
