Anthropic Pledges to Cover AI Data Center Power Costs

AI developer Anthropic announced a commitment on February 11, 2026, to shield American consumers from electricity price increases resulting from its data center expansion. The company will implement a strategy involving the payment of 100% of grid upgrade costs, investment in new power generation capacity—specifically clean energy—and direct compensation for rate increases through credits, payments, or stabilization funds.

This initiative responds to rising utility bills, which have increased by 10 to 20 percent in hubs such as Northern Virginia, central Oregon, Texas, and Georgia. Anthropic will collaborate with public utility commissions and independent analysts to determine the specific impact of its facilities on local rates. Government action has accelerated as data center energy demand is projected to reach 12% of U.S. electrical power by 2028.
