Russia Launches Nuclear Emergency Drill Amid Baltic Tensions

Russia began a large-scale nuclear emergency exercise at the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant as tensions rise over Lithuania's nuclear weapons policy.

Russia launched a two-day large-scale nuclear emergency drill on October 6, 2026, at the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant in the Sverdlovsk region. More than 1,000 personnel, including medical staff and military radiation, chemical, and biological protection forces, are simulating a simultaneous accident at two reactors caused by safety system failures and natural disasters.

Rosatom, the state-owned nuclear energy corporation, described the exercise as a routine annual requirement to test coordination and civil defense. However, the drill occurs near Mount Kosvinsky Kamen, the site of Facility 1335, an underground complex linked to the Perimeter system designed to ensure retaliatory nuclear strikes if primary leadership is incapacitated. While plant officials urged residents to remain calm, the Telegram channel Insider-T characterized the drill as a signal to Western intelligence that Russia is preparing for a war of attrition involving weapons of mass destruction.

The exercise follows a period of heightened regional instability. The Lithuanian parliament recently voted to remove its constitutional ban on nuclear weapons, prompting threats from Russian officials. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that NATO military infrastructure approaching Russian borders is a step toward escalation, while Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas linked the policy shift directly to Russian aggression in Ukraine.
