Vladimir Putin Declares Russia's Budget Deficit Manageable
Vladimir Putin stated that Russia's budget deficit poses no critical risk to the economy despite a 40% increase in the first half of the year.
President Vladimir Putin announced at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok that Russia's budget deficit is manageable and does not pose a critical risk to the national economy. The deficit grew by 40% during the first half of the year, reaching 2.8% of GDP and exceeding the official annual target of 1.6%.
Putin attributed the economy's stability to low levels of national debt, even as costs associated with the war in Ukraine continue to rise. He acknowledged that high borrowing costs have created concerns among businesses regarding future investment, but maintained that monetary policy must prioritize inflation risks, which reached 6.3% as of August 31.
To mitigate the impact of a high-rate environment, the government has implemented various loan programs to support businesses. These measures come as the Central Bank of the Russian Federation prepares for an upcoming key rate meeting to address the balance between budget deficits and inflation.
