Lithuanian Prime Minister Urges NATO to Strengthen Air Defense

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius is calling for stronger NATO air defense to counter security threats from Russia and Belarus. In a recent interview, Sinkevicius identified air defense as the most urgent priority for Lithuania, citing a series of drone and weather balloon incursions from Belarus as evidence of broader European insecurity.

Sinkevicius argued that while Article 5 and collective defense remain essential, member states must strengthen their own deterrence capabilities rather than relying solely on allies. He emphasized that the security of Lithuanian airspace is essential for the protection of the alliance's common airspace.

Beyond military strategy, Sinkevicius asserted that national security must be integrated with support for vulnerable citizens to maintain societal stability. He also reaffirmed Lithuania's commitment to Ukraine, with the government allocating at least 0.25% of its annual GDP to support the country. Sinkevicius is scheduled to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on September 29, 2026, for a joint press conference.
