Brazil Warns EU Delegates of US and Russian Election Interference
Brazilian intelligence officials briefed French and German delegations on alleged election interference by the United States and Russia ahead of Brazil's first-round presidential vote.
Intelligence officials from the Agencia Brasileira de Inteligência briefed a delegation from France and Germany in Brasilia from September 9-11 regarding alleged election interference by the United States and Russia. Brazilian officials described US actions as ranging from "lawfare to interference that is openly acknowledged." These warnings come as Brazil prepares for a tight first-round election this Sunday between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.
The EU delegation, which included representatives from France's Viginum and Arcom and Germany's Federal Network Agency, originally visited to coordinate responses for 2026 elections and discuss the Digital Services Act. A Brazilian cyber official noted that cyberattacks in the country have nearly doubled since 2025, specifically highlighting an increase in phishing attempts targeting the president's office.
The US State Department and the Russian embassy in Brazil did not respond to requests for comment. While the German Federal Network Agency participated in the briefings, it stated that possible US meddling in German elections was not discussed during the visit.
