August 12 Primaries Reveal Mixed Results for Trump-Backed Candidates

Tuesday's primary elections revealed diverging ideological and generational trends across several states. In Wisconsin, David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, won a narrow victory over democratic socialist Francesca Hong to secure the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. In contrast, Minnesota Democrats showed greater unity by supporting progressive Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan for governor.

Republican results were mixed regarding the influence of Donald Trump. In South Carolina, Darline Graham advanced to a U.S. Senate runoff with Trump's endorsement, where she will face Representative Ralph Norman. However, Minnesota Republicans rejected Trump-backed Mike Lindell, instead selecting House Speaker Lisa Demuth as their gubernatorial nominee.

Generational turnover was most prominent in Connecticut, where former Hartford mayor Luke Bronin defeated 78-year-old House incumbent John Larson in a Democratic primary. Other races favored established leadership, as Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut and Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota both successfully won their respective nominations.
