Liberal Democrats Urge Prime Minister Burnham to Call Climate Summit

The Liberal Democrats have requested that Prime Minister Andy Burnham convene a cross-party meeting of United Kingdom party leaders to address the climate crisis and prepare for extreme weather. The proposal comes after five successive heatwaves since May and warnings that an unprecedented super El Niño will likely bring intense storms and flooding during the autumn and winter months.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey and energy security spokesperson Pippa Heylings proposed the summit two weeks ago but report they have received no response from the Prime Minister. While Labour MP Clive Lewis supported the call for political cooperation, other Labour members expressed skepticism regarding whether Reform UK or the Conservatives would participate in such talks.

The Government of the United Kingdom defended its current record, stating it is a world leader in tackling the climate crisis. Officials cited investments in new reservoirs and the allocation of 10.5 billion pounds for flood and coastal erosion schemes by 2036. A Conservative spokesperson declined to speculate on the proposed cross-party meetings.
