Russia and Ukraine Escalate Long-Range Drone and Missile War

Russia and Ukraine have entered an intensifying tit-for-tat air war characterized by long-range strikes on civilian and economic infrastructure. Vladimir Putin has ordered massive bombardments of Kyiv and other cities, specifically targeting energy facilities and ports in the Odesa region to cripple agricultural exports and the energy grid ahead of winter. Russia has also deployed new jet-powered drones capable of speeds up to 370 mph, which have reduced the effectiveness of Ukrainian mobile anti-drone groups.

In response, Ukraine conducted a 40-day campaign throughout the summer of 2026 targeting Russian oil refineries, airports, and e-commerce warehouses. These strikes caused severe fuel shortages in Moscow and travel disruptions from St. Petersburg to Siberia. To counter the new Russian aerial threats, Ukraine is testing new interceptors and developing its own ballistic missiles.

The escalation coincides with internal Russian political tension ahead of parliamentary elections on September 18-20, amid rumors of new troop mobilization and a decline in Putin's approval ratings. While CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently visited Moscow to encourage a deal, the Kremlin maintains that U.S.-led peace negotiations are in a deep pause. Both nations continue to expand their strike capabilities to gain leverage for eventual settlement talks.
