India Targets 100 GW Nuclear Capacity by 2047

Union Minister Jitendra Singh reaffirmed India's commitment to peaceful nuclear energy to power AI infrastructure and achieve net zero emissions by 2070.

Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh reaffirmed that India's nuclear programme is dedicated to national development and peaceful purposes rather than warfare. Speaking at the Bloomberg Economy Forum 2026, Singh stated that nuclear energy will be critical to meeting future electricity demands, particularly for data centers and Artificial Intelligence.

The Government of India aims to reach 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 and achieve Net Zero emissions by 2070. Singh described AI as a cross-sector tool but emphasized that human judgment is necessary to prevent misuse, noting that "one has to be intelligent enough to use Artificial Intelligence."

Singh also highlighted that the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expanded private sector participation in critical and sensitive sectors. These areas were previously restricted to government players, a shift intended to foster innovation and technological advancement.
