Nvidia and Tech Giants Urge Open AI Weight Models

A coalition of more than 20 major technology companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft Corporation, Meta Platforms, Inc., and Palantir Technologies Inc., issued an open letter on July 25, 2026, advocating for the protection of open-weight artificial intelligence models. The companies argue that allowing users to download and modify AI on their own infrastructure accelerates innovation, enhances cybersecurity, and prevents AI capabilities from being concentrated within a few closed systems.

The push for open-weight models follows the release of China's Moonshot AI Kimi K3, which has reportedly outperformed some American models. The coalition warns that sweeping or premature regulations could stifle competition and drive AI development overseas, potentially undermining U.S. national security and economic prosperity. While OpenAI and Anthropic did not sign the letter, OpenAI President Greg Brockman expressed support for democratizing AI usage.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed support for open-source AI and the innovation it unlocks. However, he warned that the administration would use sanctions and Entity List designations against Chinese firms that engage in intellectual property theft through industrial-scale distillation attacks. The signing companies advocate for these targeted legal frameworks to address theft rather than broad restrictions on AI techniques.
