Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro Tied Ahead of Presidential Runoff

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro are locked in a statistical tie ahead of Brazil's October 25 presidential runoff election.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro are locked in a statistical tie entering the October 25 presidential runoff. Recent polling from Datafolha and Vox Brasil shows both candidates at approximately 50% of valid votes, a narrowing of the gap after Bolsonaro led the October 4 first round with 47.03% to Lula's 45.16%.

The campaign has been defined by extreme polarization and mutual accusations of corruption. Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has focused on public security and fiscal austerity, while Lula has emphasized social safety nets and national sovereignty. Tensions peaked during televised debates where Bolsonaro used the pejorative nickname "nine fingers" to describe Lula, and Lula challenged Bolsonaro to disclose his banking and phone records to prove his integrity.

Legal battles have shifted to the Superior Electoral Court, with both candidates filing petitions to disqualify each other. Lula alleges that Meta used algorithmic manipulation to favor Bolsonaro, while Bolsonaro claims the government abused state databases to send promotional WhatsApp messages. Meta has denied these claims but was ordered by the court to prove equal treatment of both campaigns.

International influence has also played a role, with Argentine President Javier Milei calling Lula a "leftist thief" and suggesting the election could be stolen. Brazil's foreign ministry rebuked these comments as external interference. Meanwhile, the race is viewed as a geopolitical pivot between alignment with the United States under Donald Trump or maintaining a leftist presence in Latin America.
