India's Rooftop Solar Scheme Surpasses 5 Million Installations

The Government of India has surpassed 50.06 lakh residential rooftop solar installations through its PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana program. This milestone comes just over two years after the scheme's launch, representing a significant acceleration compared to the 7.94 lakh installations recorded during the preceding ten years. Growth peaked in July 2026, when 5.06 lakh households joined the program in a single month.

To support the initiative, the government deployed a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, which includes Rs 28,024 crore distributed as direct subsidies to beneficiaries. These investments have led to the commissioning of 14.8 GW of capacity. The transition has resulted in 19 lakh households achieving zero electricity bills, while another 12 lakh households earned a collective Rs 421 crore in fiscal year 2025 by selling surplus power back to the grid.

Beyond residential sectors, the program has solarized 1.06 lakh government buildings and established a professional infrastructure consisting of more than 34,000 registered vendors to maintain and scale the rollout.
