Donald Trump Claims US Acquired Greenland and Venezuela

President Donald Trump claimed the United States acquired sovereignty over Greenland and Venezuela, though official records and foreign governments contradict these assertions.

President Donald Trump claimed during a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, on October 25, 2026, that the United States has acquired sovereignty over both Greenland and Venezuela. He described the acquisitions as the greatest real estate deal in history and stated that mineral and energy exploration would soon begin in Greenland.

These claims contradict official agreements and diplomatic realities. A Memorandum of Understanding signed on October 22 between the U.S. and Denmark specifically excludes Greenland and the Faroe Islands from its scope, focusing instead on maritime industrial cooperation. While a separate tripartite agreement allows for resource exploration in Greenland, Denmark maintains full sovereignty over the territory.

Regarding Venezuela, Trump's claims follow a January military operation that captured former dictator Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Although Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has signaled a diplomatic reset and a transition toward democracy, Venezuela remains a sovereign nation. Trump framed this political transition and the resulting access to oil fields as a strategic acquisition of the country.
