Sagal Abdi-Wali Campaigns for Holborn and St Pancras Seat

Labour Party candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali, the former leader of Camden Council, is campaigning for the Holborn and St Pancras seat in a byelection scheduled for October 8. The vacancy follows the resignation of former prime minister Keir Starmer, who left the seat to focus on international affairs.

Abdi-Wali is positioning herself as a local champion focused on housing and community issues. Her candidacy has faced challenges from Green Party candidate Zack Polanski, who is targeting the constituency's young and diverse population by criticizing Labour's stance on Gaza and Palestine. The result of the election is viewed as a test of national appeal for Labour leader Andy Burnham.

During the campaign, Reform UK home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf questioned Abdi-Wali's candidacy based on her Somali origin. Abdi-Wali stated that these comments motivated her to run in order to counter hateful rhetoric.
