Russia and North Korea Open First Direct Road Bridge

Russia and North Korea opened a one-kilometer road bridge over the Tumen River to boost trade and military cooperation between the two nations.

The Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea opened their first road bridge over the Tumen River on Monday, September 8, 2026. The one-kilometer, two-lane structure connects the border cities of Khasan, Russia, and Rason, North Korea, establishing the only direct vehicle link between the two countries.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song inaugurated the bridge via video link. The bridge is named after Yakov Novichenko, a Soviet officer who saved North Korean founder Kim Il Sung in 1946. The facility includes a new border crossing point capable of handling up to 300 vehicles daily, with full passenger traffic expected by the end of 2026. The project began in April 2025 following a 2024 agreement between Vladimir Putin and North Korean leadership, though reports indicate costs at least doubled from an initial $100 million estimate.

The opening follows a period of deepening strategic ties, including a mutual defense treaty and the provision of North Korean troops and ammunition for Russia's war in Ukraine in exchange for economic and military aid. While officials describe the bridge as a tool for trade and cultural cooperation, experts warn the infrastructure could facilitate the movement of military equipment in violation of U.N. resolutions and is more difficult to monitor via satellite than existing rail links.
