Israel Files Defamation Lawsuit Against New York Times

The Government of Israel is suing The New York Times after a Nicholas Kristof column alleged that Israeli forces used dogs to rape Palestinian prisoners.

The Government of Israel is pursuing a defamation lawsuit against The New York Times following an opinion column by Nicholas Kristof alleging widespread sexual violence against Palestinian detainees. The article, titled 'The Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians,' included claims that Israeli security forces trained dogs to sexually assault prisoners, based on interviews with 14 individuals and reports from the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar described the allegations as a modern-day blood libel and one of the most distorted lies ever published against the state. Israeli officials argued the column was strategically timed to overshadow a report by the Civil Commission on October 7th Crimes by Hamas Against Women and Children, which documented systemic sexual violence committed by Hamas. Experts, including canine aggression specialist James Crosby, challenged the biological plausibility of the claims.

The New York Times has remained defiant, stating that the reporting was deeply researched and fact-checked. Spokespeople for the newspaper dismissed the legal threats as a political tactic to stifle independent journalism. The controversy sparked protests by hundreds of demonstrators outside the newspaper's Manhattan headquarters and drew condemnation from various Jewish leadership organizations, who likened the reporting to historical antisemitic libels.
