Lai Ching-te Asserts Taiwan Sovereignty Amid US-China Tensions

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te declared the island's future must be decided by its own people after Donald Trump suggested using arms sales as a negotiating chip with China.

President Lai Ching-te asserted on May 20, 2026, that the future of Taiwan must be determined by its 23 million people and cannot be decided by external forces or held hostage by fear. Delivering the remarks at the Presidential Office in Taipei to mark his second anniversary in office, Lai declared the Republic of China a sovereign and independent country. He vowed to increase defense spending to prevent war and maintain the status quo, rejecting unification attempts disguised as peace.

These statements followed a state visit to Beijing by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that a proposed US$14 billion arms package to Taiwan could serve as a "good negotiating chip" with China. Lai stated that if he spoke with Trump, he would emphasize that China is the actor undermining regional stability and that no country has the right to annex Taiwan.

The Government of China reacted with condemnation, with the Taiwan Affairs Office dismissing Lai's speech as being filled with "lies and deception." Chinese spokespersons labeled Lai a separatist and a saboteur of peace, asserting that reunification is an inevitable historical trend. To signal its resolve, China deployed a carrier task force led by the Liaoning into the Western Pacific for live-firing drills, which the Chinese navy defended as routine training. Taiwan responded by publishing rare imagery of Chinese warships and fighter jets operating near the island.
