Senators Press Rubio and Bessent Over Russia Sanctions Pause

U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Christopher Coons have formally questioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over a 17-month pause in imposing counter-evasion sanctions on Russia. The senators argue that the Trump administration previously delayed these measures to observe the progress of peace talks, but those discussions have since stalled or failed to materialize.

The letter notes that the United States Department of the Treasury has not issued major sanctions since October 2025, when it targeted Rosneft and Lukoil. Warren and Coons are seeking clarification on why the administration has not resumed routine sanctions to rebuild leverage for a just peace in Ukraine.

While the Senate recently passed new sanctions legislation, its implementation remains uncertain. Lawmakers have expressed concerns that the bill could grant President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs on U.S. allies in Europe and Japan.
