Trump Administration Seeks Endangered Species Act Oil Drilling Exemption

The administration of Donald Trump is attempting to bypass Endangered Species Act requirements to expand oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth requested the exemption, citing national security concerns linked to the U.S.-Iran war. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum is scheduled to convene the Endangered Species Committee, often called the God Squad, to consider the request.

The United States Department of Justice argues that national security provisions override the standard legal requirements for such committee meetings. However, the Center for Biological Diversity has filed a lawsuit to block the proceedings, alleging that the administration ignored proper procedures and biological opinion requirements. District Judge Rudolph Contreras is set to hear the motion on Friday.

Environmentalists warn that a blanket exemption for all exploration and development activities in the region could jeopardize protected species, specifically the Rice's whale.
