Omar Abdullah Moves Resolution Demanding Jammu and Kashmir Statehood

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on September 25, 2026, demanding the immediate and full restoration of statehood for the region. Abdullah argued that the Government of India had promised a three-step process involving delimitation, elections, and statehood, noting that the first two stages are complete. He specifically cited a personal assurance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The resolution sparked chaos and physical scuffles when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators objected to references to previous resolutions from 2024 and June 26, 2000. The 2000 resolution specifically sought greater autonomy for the region. BJP members, led by Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, stormed the Well of the House, tore copies of the resolution, and shouted slogans asserting that the region belongs to India in its entirety.

Abdullah defended the inclusion of the 2000 resolution, stating it was necessary to demonstrate a consistent fight for constitutional rights and that the current demand adds to, rather than replaces, past resolutions. He urged BJP members to vote on the resolution rather than obstruct proceedings. Sunil Sharma declared the autonomy reference "controversial and unacceptable," stating the BJP would oppose any discussion regarding autonomy or Article 370.

Following the ruckus and failed appeals for decorum, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather adjourned the House first for half an hour and eventually for the remainder of the day.
