Ukraine Deploys AI Drones and Launches Gulf Diplomacy Strategy

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has launched a dual-track drone strategy involving high-tech offensive operations within Ukraine and a diplomatic outreach program to the Persian Gulf. To disrupt Russian military logistics, Ukraine is deploying AI-enabled Hornet drones to strike fuel convoys and command nodes 30 to 120 kilometers behind front lines. These platforms use autonomous targeting to bypass electronic warfare, specifically targeting hubs in Mariupol and the R-150 highway. President Zelenskyy reported a significant increase in these mid-range strikes during May 2026.

Simultaneously, Ukraine is pursuing a drone diplomacy strategy, offering military expertise and defensive technology to Persian Gulf nations. This move follows Iranian drone and missile strikes on infrastructure in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as U.S. bases at Al Udeid and Diego Garcia. Zelenskyy proposed exchanging this technical expertise for advanced U.S. air defense systems and seeking investment to utilize 40 percent of Ukraine's currently idle drone-manufacturing capacity.

Ukraine continues its energy campaign against Russia, having conducted drone strikes on the Rosneft refinery and marine terminal in Tuapse between April 16 and April 28, 2026. These attacks caused an oil spill affecting 50 kilometers of coastline, which the Kremlin labeled as environmental terrorism. Meanwhile, the Government of Mali severed diplomatic ties with Ukraine over alleged support for terrorist attacks.
