Supreme Court Grants 31 of 32 Trump Emergency Petitions

The Supreme Court of the United States has drawn criticism for its perceived failure to restrain the executive power of Donald Trump during his second term. While lower courts blocked numerous administration policies, the high court frequently overruled those decisions, granting 31 of 32 emergency petitions filed by the administration. This trend is linked to the court's application of the unitary executive theory, which posits that the president should maintain broader control over executive branch agencies.

These rulings have enabled the administration to dismantle the Department of Education and withhold $4 billion in foreign aid. Other central legal battles include the revocation of birthright citizenship, the removal of Federal Trade Commission members, and the imposition of unilateral tariffs.

Despite the majority's leanings, some justices expressed reservations. During oral arguments regarding tariffs, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch conveyed skepticism. Justice Gorsuch specifically questioned the long-term implications of this shift in power, asking, "What president's ever going to give that power back?"
