Supreme Court Grants Trump Authority to End Haitian TPS

The Supreme Court ruled President Donald Trump can terminate Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Syrians, sparking protests and legislative pleas to prevent mass deportations.

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled 6-3 that Donald Trump possesses the authority to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 Haitian nationals and 6,000 Syrians. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security claims conditions in Haiti have improved enough for safe return, though this contradicts a Level 4 travel advisory from the U.S. Department of State citing widespread violence and kidnapping.

Following the ruling, faith leaders in Tallahassee and activists in Miami organized protests and sent pleas to government officials to shield families from deportation. In Miami, rally organizers emphasized that TPS holders are integral to the South Florida economy. Meanwhile, in Springfield, Ohio, the Haitian Support Center is assisting thousands of residents facing legal uncertainty as work authorizations for Haitian TPS holders expire on July 10, 2026.

Political responses in Florida remain split. Representative Carlos Gimenez called the potential termination a "huge mistake," while Representative Bernie Jacques argued that a temporary program should not become permanent. To prevent mass deportations, advocates are urging the U.S. Senate to pass a bipartisan measure, previously approved by the House, that would extend TPS through April 20, 2029. This bill requires Senate approval and the president's signature to become law.
