China and Sri Lanka Deepen Economic and Infrastructure Ties

Sri Lanka and China are strengthening bilateral cooperation through infrastructure projects and trade to support the island nation's post-crisis economic recovery.

The Government of Sri Lanka and the Government of China are expanding bilateral ties to accelerate Sri Lanka's post-crisis economic recovery, with a primary focus on trade, technology, and infrastructure. A central pillar of this partnership is Port City Colombo, a special economic zone developed by the Sri Lankan government and China Harbour Engineering Co under the Belt and Road Initiative. By May 2026, the zone had attracted more than 250 companies and established both a duty-free complex and an IT park.

Economic integration has seen a measurable increase, with bilateral trade reaching $6.16 billion in 2025, representing a 15 percent rise over the prior year. Beyond urban development, the two nations are collaborating with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on agricultural projects aimed at improving tropical fruit production.

Sri Lankan officials are now seeking further cooperation in digital transformation and renewable energy to better integrate the country into global value chains. This strategy aligns with a broader objective to ensure that future developments under the Belt and Road Initiative remain sustainable and mutually beneficial for both populations.
