Donald Trump Cuts Ground Beef Tariffs to Lower Food Costs

President Donald Trump announced a 90-day plan to import 300,000 metric tons of ground beef without tariffs to combat food inflation.

Donald Trump announced a plan on Friday to allow the import of up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef into the United States without out-of-quota tariffs for the next 90 days. The initiative seeks to lower grocery costs for consumers amid record-high beef prices and stubborn food inflation, a move viewed as critical ahead of the November midterm elections.

The president stated the administration secured a commitment that the imported beef will be sold at 25% below current market prices, though he did not identify the source countries or the parties making the commitment.

This action follows a period where the U.S. cattle herd reached its lowest level since the 1950s, increasing costs for meatpackers. To address the supply chain, the administration has also worked to reopen ports to Mexican cattle and launched antitrust probes into the largest meatpackers. While some congressional Republicans and cattle rancher groups have opposed increased foreign imports, the move follows a July announcement by Walmart to reduce ground beef prices by 12%.
