Trump Lifts Sanctions on Eritrea to Secure Red Sea Interests

President Donald Trump lifted United States sanctions on Eritrea on Friday, allowing a national emergency declaration to expire. The measures, originally established in 2021 by the Joe Biden administration via Executive Order 14046, targeted the Eritrean Defense Forces and the ruling People's Front for Democracy and Justice following accusations of atrocities during the conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray region.

The United States Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control removed several entities from the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons list, including the Red Sea Trading Corporation and the Hidri Trust, as well as officials Hagos Gebrehiwot Woldekidan and Abraha Kassa Nemariam. The U.S. Department of State stated the shift is necessary to adapt foreign policy to current realities and advance regional interests.

This strategic pivot comes as the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait face increased security threats from Houthi advances in Yemen. With the Strait of Hormuz blocked and ongoing conflict involving Iran, the Red Sea has become a critical oil shipping route. Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel welcomed the move, characterizing the previous sanctions as unwarranted.
