Progressives Win Minnesota Primaries as Trump Endorsements Falter

Primary elections held on August 11 and 12, 2026, across six states revealed deep ideological rifts and a trend toward generational change. In Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate with approximately 59 percent of the vote, defeating centrist Representative Angie Craig. Flanagan's victory for the progressive wing was fueled by campaigns against U.S. military aid to Israel and backlash over the fatal shooting of two residents by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis.

In the Minnesota gubernatorial race, Senator Amy Klobuchar won the Democratic nomination with roughly 90 percent of the vote. She will face Republican nominee Lisa Demuth, the Minnesota House Speaker, who won her primary with 44 percent of the vote. Demuth defeated MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, who lost despite an endorsement from President Donald Trump. In Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley narrowly defeated democratic socialist Francesca Hong for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. In South Carolina, Trump-endorsed Senator Darline Graham failed to win her primary outright and will enter an August 25 runoff against Representative Ralph Norman. Additionally, 78-year-old Democratic incumbent Representative John Larson was ousted in Connecticut by former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, signaling a broader shift toward younger leadership.
