Trump Invites Russian Finance Minister to G20 Amid European Protest

President Donald Trump invited Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov to a two-day G20 finance meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, marking the first in-person attendance by a Russian official since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Trump defended the decision by stating he believes in talking to everyone and argued that Russia's previous ejection from the G8 was a mistake.

The invitation triggered a diplomatic rift with European allies. German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil led a protest, characterizing the move as a troubling attempt at normalization. In a symbolic gesture of opposition, European ministers and central bankers boycotted the traditional family photo, resulting in the image being taken without Siluanov.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held a bilateral meeting with Siluanov to discuss G20 collaboration and Trump's peace framework for Ukraine. However, Bessent explicitly informed Siluanov that the United States would provide no economic relief or sanctions agreements until the war in Ukraine ends. Other summit discussions focused on reducing a $353 trillion global debt overhang, rebalancing China's trade surplus, and the impact of an AI-driven investment surge on global markets.

The summit was further marred by controversy as the U.S. excluded South Africa from the guest list and denied media credentials to several major news organizations, including the New York Times, Bloomberg News, and the Wall Street Journal.
