Janeese Lewis George Wins D.C. Democratic Mayoral Primary

Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic primary for mayor of Washington, D.C., prompting President Donald Trump to threaten a federal takeover of the city.

Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist, won the Democratic primary for mayor of Washington, D.C., on June 16, 2026. Her main opponent, Kenyan McDuffie, conceded on June 18 after unofficial results showed Lewis George holding approximately 53% of the vote. The election marked the first time the district used a ranked-choice voting system for citywide races. Lewis George campaigned on a progressive platform featuring universal affordable childcare, rent caps, and an end to local police cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

President Donald Trump responded to her victory by threatening to invoke the Home Rule Act to place Washington on a federal basis, stating he would not tolerate a socialist administration that might cause businesses to leave. Trump has already reduced the city's autonomy through National Guard deployments and federal law enforcement surges. Lewis George characterized these threats as an attack on democracy and vowed to resist federal intervention to protect the city's autonomy.

In a separate high-stakes race, Robert White Jr. won the Democratic primary for the district's non-voting delegate to Congress, succeeding 18-term incumbent Eleanor Holmes Norton. White defeated Brooke Pinto, who conceded the race on June 17. The shift toward democratic socialist candidates in D.C. mirrors a broader trend in other major cities, including recent wins by Zohran Mamdani in New York City and Katie Wilson in Seattle.
