Ukraine Develops AI Drones for Asymmetric Warfare
Yaroslav Azhnyuk is developing AI-powered autonomous drones to counter Russian forces by utilizing deep-learning neural networks for target locking.
Computer scientist Yaroslav Azhnyuk is developing AI-powered autonomous drones to provide an asymmetric advantage for Ukraine against Russian forces. Through his defense firms, The Fourth Law and Odd Systems, Azhnyuk produced the Lupynis-10-TFL-1 drone, which uses a deep-learning neural network and image recognition to autonomously navigate and lock onto tanks and armored vehicles during the final 500 meters of flight.
Azhnyuk argues that adopting these technologies is a necessity for survival because Russian forces are already deploying similar AI-enabled systems. While he acknowledges that fully autonomous target designation may be possible in the future, he maintains that current drones are not killer robots because humans still select the targets.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that AI could lead battlefield decisions as early as next year. Azhnyuk contends that if adversaries use AI for offensive decision-making while Ukraine refuses to use it defensively, the country will lose its edge.
