Amit Shah Launches India's First LNG-Powered Train in Gujarat

Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off India's first LNG-powered train and launched several railway infrastructure projects totaling over Rs 1,500 crore in Sabarmati, Gujarat, on September 27, 2026. The new train utilizes a diesel-LNG dual-fuel system designed to reduce emissions and fuel costs by replacing approximately 40 percent of diesel consumption.

Other key initiatives include the inauguration of a Rs 700 crore WAG-12 locomotive maintenance shed and the introduction of an automatic block signalling system across 122.57 km. Shah also laid the foundation stone for the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system across 404 km of the Ahmedabad division at an estimated cost of Rs 411 crore and started the Sabarmati-Sarkhej railway line doubling project.

During the event, Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for modernizing the national railway network, noting that electrification has reached 99.6 percent. He contrasted current progress with the tenure of the Indian National Congress, accusing the party of "fraud, scams and corruption worth Rs 12 lakh crore" while asserting that Modi has remained free of corruption for 12 years. Shah highlighted a significant increase in Gujarat's railway budget, which rose from Rs 589 crore during 2009-14 to Rs 17,366 crore for 2026-27.
