Nigeria Marks 66th Independence with Focus on Economic Reforms
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and government officials mark Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary by calling for the consolidation of economic reforms to ensure shared prosperity.
The Government of Nigeria commemorated the nation's 66th Independence anniversary on October 1, 2026, under the theme “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.” To mark the occasion, Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a nationwide broadcast at 7 a.m. on Thursday, while spending the celebrations in Lagos after returning from a working vacation in Europe.
During an Independence Day Public Lecture in Abuja on September 30, government officials emphasized the need to translate current economic stability into growth. Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume identified the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign-exchange market as critical actions taken to prevent national collapse. Minister of Information Mohammed Idris reported a 4.43 percent economic growth rate for the second quarter of 2026 and urged the media to maintain fact-based discourse as the next electoral cycle approaches.
Furthering the discussion on political continuity, Dr. Collins A. Aimuan suggested that a second term for President Tinubu is necessary to fully consolidate these structural changes. To support the celebrations, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo declared a public holiday, while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed 3,000 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory to maintain security.
