Pakistan and Qatar Mediate US-Iran Truce After US Bombardment

The Government of Pakistan and Qatar are intensifying diplomatic efforts to secure a broader de-escalation between the United States and Iran. This push follows a two-night lull in military strikes, ending a period of 13 consecutive nights of U.S. bombardment of Iran. The current negotiations aim to build upon a June memorandum of understanding that established a ceasefire and a framework for a final agreement to end the conflict.

U.N. Ambassador Mike Waltz stated that President Donald Trump is giving the talks space, though he noted that the U.S. military remains ready for further attacks with additional assets deployed to the region. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan coordinated these efforts through phone calls with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.

U.S. Congressmen Michael Baumgartner and Ryan Zinke praised Pakistan's mediating role during a visit to Islamabad. They noted that bilateral relations between the U.S. and Pakistan are at their strongest, driven by communication between Trump, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Field Marshal Asim Munir. Pakistan's diplomatic activity has extended to Gaza, where it recently joined the Board of Peace, an international organization established by Trump to facilitate reconstruction. This week, Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni visited Islamabad to hold talks with Pakistani government and defense leaders.
