EU Maintains Iran Sanctions and Rejects Israel Trade Penalties

Ursula von der Leyen refuses to lift sanctions on Iran and the EU fails to reach a consensus on imposing trade sanctions against Israel.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on June 15, 2026, that the European Union will not lift sanctions on Iran. This decision persists despite a June 19 memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran intended to end a destructive war. Von der Leyen conditioned any diplomatic thawing on tangible behavioral changes and the cessation of human rights violations within the Islamic Republic.

Simultaneously, the European Union failed to reach a consensus on imposing trade sanctions against Israel during a Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg. Despite pressure from Spain and Ireland to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement over military actions in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, the bloc remained divided.

These divergent positions illustrate a gap between the official diplomatic stance of the European Union and growing public opposition to Israel's actions. While the EU maintains a hard line on Iran's domestic human rights record, it has been unable to unify its member states behind economic penalties for Israel.
