US Stocks Rally After Democrats Sweep Midterm Elections

US stock markets surged Wednesday as investors reacted to a Democratic sweep of Congress and the removal of pre-election uncertainty.

US stock markets rallied on Wednesday following midterm elections in which the Democratic Party seized control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged over 1,000 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also posted significant gains. Analysts attribute the surge to the removal of pre-election uncertainty and the decision by President Donald Trump not to contest the results.

Investors favored the prospect of a split government to reduce the risk of transformative economic changes. Clean energy, healthcare, and discount retail stocks rose on expectations of bolstered federal support and the potential reversal of welfare cuts mandated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Conversely, defense and oil companies declined, with Brent crude falling below $100 per barrel. Trump Media & Technology Group saw a sharp decline of over 10%.

The AI and data center sectors experienced high volatility. While hyperscalers like Amazon and Microsoft gained, semiconductor stocks and smaller cloud providers like Micron and CoreWeave fell. This decline was driven by fears of stricter Democratic regulation and the election of Democratic governors in key hubs including Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Texas. In Texas, the victory of Governor-elect Hinojosa, who campaigned against corporate subsidies and new data center projects, sparked bearish sentiment for AI infrastructure.

Political gridlock is expected in Washington as President Trump indicated he would frequently use his veto power. Vice President JD Vance attributed the Republican losses to the war with Iran, a sentiment echoed by President Trump, who acknowledged the conflict contributed to his party's defeat.
