Trump Announces Apple and Intel Domestic Chip Partnership

President Donald Trump announced that Apple and Intel will partner to design and manufacture semiconductor chips within the United States to reduce reliance on foreign foundries.

President Donald Trump announced on June 18, 2026, that Apple Inc. has agreed to partner with Intel Corporation to design and manufacture semiconductor chips within the United States. The initiative aims to reshore the semiconductor industry and diversify Apple's supply chain, reducing its heavy dependence on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and China. The agreement is expected to focus on contract manufacturing, with Intel potentially fabricating Apple-designed silicon for M7 series and iPhone A-series chips by 2027 or 2028.

To support this domestic shift, the U.S. government holds a 10% equity stake in Intel and previously announced a $10 billion investment to expand U.S. factories. Trump stated that the value of the government's stake has grown from $100 billion to over $600 billion in nine months. The president also noted similar domestic chip initiatives involving Nvidia and Elon Musk's TerraFab.

The announcement triggered a significant market rally, with Intel shares surging over 10% to record highs and boosting the Nasdaq and Dow Jones Industrial Average. Other semiconductor firms, such as Micron Technology, also saw gains driven by AI-related memory demand. While the partnership was confirmed by the president, Apple and Intel have not yet released detailed public timelines or specific project scopes. The move aligns with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan's strategy to expand the company's foundry business and attract external marquee customers.
