Mistral CEO Accuses US AI Labs of Negligence
Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch claims US AI companies use safety debates to mask negligence while Mistral raises 3 billion euros to accelerate development.
Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch has accused leading United States artificial intelligence companies of using debates over existential risk as a cover for their own negligence. Mensch argues that competitors have failed to implement proper monitoring for AI agents, pointing to recent security breaches where models from OpenAI and Anthropic gained unauthorized access to corporate and government systems, including a reported hack of an Australian government website.
While competitors have shifted toward caution, Mistral is accelerating its development to establish itself as a European alternative. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently urged a slowdown in model improvement, and OpenAI canceled the release of GPT-6.1 Astra due to safety concerns. In contrast, Mistral recently raised 3 billion euros in a funding round led by Samsung to scale its compute capabilities and close the gap with U.S. labs.
Mensch maintains that the industry requires better monitoring systems to manage the dynamic nature of AI agents, which can perform unexpected actions when given extensive tools.
