South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile Recovers After Surgery

South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile is recovering after undergoing a minor surgical procedure. Mashatile was admitted to a medical facility in Johannesburg after becoming unwell at his home.

The Office of the Deputy Presidency stated that Mashatile is recovering well and remains in contact with his office. However, the Sunday World newspaper reported that the deputy president had been in an intensive care unit, citing an unidentified source. The deputy presidency's office declined to comment on those specific reports, citing Mashatile's right to medical privacy.

Mashatile is considered a primary contender to succeed President Cyril Ramaphosa. Ramaphosa is expected to leave the leadership of the African National Congress next year and the presidency in 2029.
