Meta Executives Scale Back Surveillance Amid Plummeting Employee Morale
Meta leadership is reducing employee surveillance and AI training mandates after mass layoffs and high-pressure management caused internal morale to collapse.
Meta executives are implementing damage control measures after a period of severe workforce instability and declining morale. Since 2022, the company adopted a high-pressure management style that included mass layoffs of over 32,000 employees, keystroke monitoring, and forced reassignments to AI training units.
Company leadership has recently acknowledged the negative impact of these policies. CTO Andrew Bosworth admitted that morale is likely at its worst and characterized the recent restructuring as an atrocious job. CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted the company made mistakes, while Chief Product Officer Chris Cox described the internal environment as brutal.
In response to employee unrest, which includes petitions against surveillance and unionization efforts in the United Kingdom, the company has begun scaling back its keystroke-monitoring program. Meta is now allowing employees to opt out of AI training roles, and Zuckerberg has pledged that no further large-scale job cuts will occur through the end of the year.
