Democrats Warn Trump Administration Plans to Steal Midterm Elections
Democratic leaders accuse President Donald Trump of planning to interfere with the 2026 midterm elections through legal challenges and voter roll purges.
Democratic leaders and candidates are warning that Donald Trump and the Republican Party intend to interfere with the 2026 midterm elections. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have characterized the political environment as one of potential rigging, with Schumer stating that a stolen election is one of only two factors that could prevent Democrats from securing a Senate majority.
These warnings coincide with actions by the Trump administration to challenge election processes. The United States Department of Justice has sued Alaska to block the certification of its Senate election if a Democrat wins and has pursued claims of mass noncitizen voting in California. Governor Gavin Newsom has specifically accused the administration of attempting to purge voter registration rolls.
Further concerns involve the security of election infrastructure. Reports indicate that purges of federal employees have reduced personnel dedicated to cyber defense, a vulnerability that coincided with a recent hacking attempt on the Federal Election Commission website. While generic ballot surveys currently favor Democrats, analysts note that narrow margins could test whether Democratic leaders will accept results they have preemptively questioned.
