Global Refining Crisis Drives Sustained Energy Inflation

Donald Trump warns of rising energy prices as conflict in the Middle East and Ukraine eliminates critical global oil refining capacity.

The global oil refining industry has reached a critical breaking point, threatening years of sustained energy inflation. While crude oil markets have partially stabilized, the cost of refined products like diesel and gasoline remains high due to a dramatic decline in output. The conflict with Iran eliminated over 20% of Middle East refining capacity and closed the Strait of Hormuz, while simultaneous Ukrainian strikes reduced Russian refining throughput by nearly 30%.

These disruptions have depleted global fuel stockpiles to historic lows. The Energy Information Administration reported that global oil stocks declined by 3.5 million barrels per day between March and July, creating a production shortfall that exceeds demand reduction. In response to these losses, the Federal Government of Russia banned diesel exports in July.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, warned citizens to prepare for higher energy prices as inflation continues to rise across the U.S., Euro-zone, and Japan. Experts note that even a diplomatic resolution to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would provide limited immediate relief, as more than 20 Gulf refineries require extensive repairs with long lead times for equipment.
