Young Voters Shift Toward Democrats in New York Times Poll

Voters aged 18 to 29 show a 15-point increase in Democratic alignment driven by economic dissatisfaction and opposition to the war in Iran.

A New York Times and Siena University poll reveals a significant political shift among voters aged 18 to 29, with 70 percent now identifying as Democrats or leaning toward the party. This represents a 15-point increase from the period before the 2024 election. Young voters currently favor Democratic congressional candidates by 44 percentage points.

Donald Trump faces deep dissatisfaction among this demographic, with only 16 percent of young voters approving of his job performance. The shift is driven primarily by poor economic conditions, high gas prices, and opposition to the war in Iran. Young men, in particular, cite the cost of living and family needs as primary motivations for changing their political affiliation.

While young voters express concerns regarding Democratic infighting and a desire for the party to move further left, they characterize the Republican Party as more extreme, elitist, and corrupt.
