Federal Reserve to Review Balance Sheet Recommendations in 2027

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh announced the Federal Open Market Committee will review task force recommendations on asset holdings in early 2027.

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh announced that the Federal Open Market Committee will begin reviewing recommendations from a task force studying balance sheet issues in early 2027. The task force is examining how the central bank utilizes its holdings of bonds, cash, and other assets to meet policy goals.

The Federal Reserve's holdings peaked at approximately $9 trillion in 2022 and have since decreased to around $6.8 trillion. Warsh has argued that large-scale bond purchases distort markets, a position that remains contested within the bank. He noted that further reductions in holdings would necessitate modifications to the short-term interest rate toolkit and regulatory changes concerning emergency cash levels for financial institutions.

Warsh stated that the task force's findings are unlikely to have a material effect on current policymaking. However, he clarified that any subsequent changes to the balance sheet will occur only after a serious consideration of the panel's proposals.
